EMDR

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro initially to treat trauma and PTSD, however it's been found to help with a variety of mental health struggles. The main idea is that trauma happens when something overwhelms our nervous system, and we are not able to integrate the memory. We then learn negative beliefs about ourselves, the memories get stuck, and now every time you remember it it feels like it's happening again right now. EMDR helps reprocess traumatic or distressing memories. We revisit them, bringing new understanding to them, so you can walk away with more positive beliefs about yourself.

My approach is trauma-informed, rooted in attachment theory and a social justice lens. My goal is to work myself out of a job, getting you to the point where you can handle life's challenges with your own strength and power.

LENS Neurofeedback

LENS stands for Low-Energy NeuroStimulation. It was developed by Dr. Len Ochs in 1990 as a passive, more accessible version of the types of neurofeedback that existed at that time. It works by picking up the electromagnetic frequency of your brain and nervous system, amplifying that frequency by just a smidge (less than 1/1000 the strength of your cell phone), and sending that signal back to your body. In the way that a dancer uses a mirror to correct their movements, this allows the brain to see what it's doing and self-correct.

LENS has shown to increase neuroplasticity in the brain, which helps your brain heal from emotional trauma, especially when combined with EMDR. This is an adjunct service I provide as part of therapy, at no additional cost.

What to expect

We'll begin with a 20-minute phone consultation, where we have the chance to start getting to know each other. If we decide it's a good fit, we'll schedule our recurring appointments. I'll send you an intake packet to fill out, then we get started.

The first few sessions will be assessment and resourcing (a.k.a. developing coping skills and getting things stable). I'll learn about you, your struggles, and where you want to be headed in life. I'll also help you learn and practice tools for self-regulation, so you can handle what life throws your way. During this time we'll work together to figure out your treatment goals. After we have a sense of where we want to go, from there we'll work collaboratively to challenge you and help you grow.
